I'm trying to retrieve some data from a laptop hard drive. When the drive is installed in the laptop, I get "Bad command or filename" "File not found" "C:\>" when trying to boot up.

The DIR command produces "Volume in C drive has no label" then lists 8 file(s) and 0 dir(s).

I thought I could get the files off this drive using a USB-IDE adapter but the files and folders for the most part have giberish for names and when I try opening a folder I get "the filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect".

Will I have to resort to some sort of data recovery software if I've any chance to get to the data?

Software
1. Plug your failed hard drive to an already powered up computer, booted from another hard disk drive
2. Go to Device Manager
3. Right click on Disk Drives
4. Scan for Hardware Changes
5. See if your hard drive pops up

If yes, use one of the utilities you downloaded from MDR software page
Install and Run it, see if it helps

If no, try a few more times. If still no, might want to use data recovery services.
