hi,

i would like to know if i install my OS and apps on an external hard drive( make it bootable of course).

Could i make a server notebook eg ( HP COMPAQ 6720 THIN CLIENT NOTEBOOK)

boot from usb then use it like a stand alone laptop?

then when i get home, have the external HDD plugged into my desktop( again boot from usb )

and use the apps on it?

any help would be good thanks.

With Windows, No (due to hardware changes, product activation blah, blah, blah); with Linux, Yes, most (but not all) distributions support booting from USB.

Check out puppy Linux. Another thing you can do is run XP on a virtual machine from an external drive, that way whatever you do on there stays on there.
