What is a good 2x1GB kit to upgrade to from 1 GB of no-name RAM? This is for a friend in Canada, if that influences anything relating to price/performance.

Max price is $100 CND.

Hi nukchebi0 can you specify what type of RAM your looking for. I'm guessing its standard DDR2 800. For $100 CND you get a lot more for your money now due to DDR3 pushing down DDR2 prices. This decent 4gb kit is only $94.99 CND after rebate. http://www.ncix.com/products/index [...] re=Patriot

Thanks for the help...yes it was just DDR2-6400. I will see if he is available right now to get the other, I recommended a G.Skill kit (the one on Newegg with 1720 reviews), for 62 CND.

Since he has XP and a Pentium D 3.0 Ghz, I think the 4GB will be wasted.

OK yes I agree 4gb isn't really necessary but definitely within his budget if he wants it. I guess he can always buy another 2x1gb kit in the future.
