I recently noticed that my second DVD burner is not functioning properly.  It shows up in 'My Computer' and in the 'Device Manager' it is listed as functioning normally.  However, it does not open, and now whenever I try and burn anything I get a message telling me that 'DMA' is not on.  I went into the Device Manager and DMA is set to On for both of my devices.

Here's my setup:

Windows XP SP2
AMD 64 X2 4200
HP DVD Writer 640c (not working properly)
TSST Corp CD/DVD SH-W162Z
2 GB RAM

Any suggestions?

wasn't there some issue with XP service pack 3 and DMA? did you install an early version of SP3?

Let me get this straight, that burner used to work and now it doesn't?

Have you installed or uninstalled anything since the last time it worked?

Since one burner works and one doesn't, I'm starting to think the burner may be defect. Can you try that burner in a different PC?

I agree with Aevm, the burner may have failed. One other thing to check is that the power and data cables are not loose. Besides testing the suspect burner in a different PC, you might try a different burner in place of the suspect one.

Yeah, it worked fine last time I used it (about a month ago).  It still shows up on my list of devices as working properly, and I can still select it when I bring up a list of DVD drives.  I thought it may have been a power suppy issue, but I switched the cables and plug them into different devices, but still no go.  It's possible that the burner may have failed (it's about 2, maybe 3 years old).

But that DMA thing, could having a defective burner affect this?  Why can't I burn anything even with my working one?  Basically, I've just finished editing a wedding, and I'm trying to burn the DVD, but it tells me the DMA is turned off.

OK, I'm confused. Does any of your two burners burn now? If it doesn't burn please don't call it "the working one", it makes it harder to figure things out. If both are refusing to burn, it's in the software or the motherboard. For example we had a thread recently with a Supermicro motherboard and two burners that refused to burn, and it turned out it was because the motherboard didn't have drivers for Vista.

I have two burners.  The HP one that I'm having problems with, does not work at all. Meaning, it doesn't open either by pressing the eject button or by using software to open the tray.  I have another burner that opens and closes fine, and reads CD/DVD's just fine.  However, when I use that drive to burn something, I get the DMA error.

The burner that doesn't work still shows up in my Device Manager and My Computer.  It just doesn't work, I can't open it, read from it, etc.

My main issue right now is the DMA problem, as I'm sure the non-working burner is probably dead or something and needs to be replaced.

OK. So, the non-working burner doesn't tell us anything. It may just be dead and we can't say anything about the rest of the PC based on it.

The other burner might be unable to burn because of a driver or BIOS issue, or it may be defect too. Can you borrow a third burner, known to work, and try it in your PC? Just trying to narrow down the causes...

If it's a BIOS issue, what settings should I be looking for when I go into the BIOS menu?  Thanks for the help, by the way.

Don't know, sorry. I don't think it's the BIOS settings. I mentioned the BIOS because I've talked to people who had this problem and they fixed it by updating the BIOS. That is, it was a bug in the BIOS, not a BIOS setting.
