I’m putting together a new computer for my brother and he wanted to spend around $1,000. He is going to mainly use it for gaming and the internet. The toughest decision I was trying to make was what which kind of RAM to use which would determine what motherboard I could use. I waned to keep the upgrading options as wide open as possible which made me lean towards using DDR3 ram and buying a SLI board that used DDR3 memory. I found 2 GB of DDR 1333 Ram for about $130 with a Cas Latency 9 and a motherboard for $140 that I thought would be nice. But, from reading through these forums I started to have second thoughts. Most people thought that a faster DDR2 is just as good as the slower DDR3, and I could get twice as much RAM for $40 cheaper. The only downside I see to using DDR2 is future upgrading, but I decided that he’d be better of with the DDR2. However, I chose a SLI motherboard so he’ll have the option to do 2 graphic cards in the future if he wants to. Anyway, any thoughts on this build would greatly appreciated.

Unless he has definite plans for SLI, I would recommend you get him an Intel P35 based motherboard and save a few bucks. Thats just my personal recommendation though, since most people never end up getting that second video card, or when the time comes, theres a single card they can get that will beat their current rig in SLI. Either way, it looks like it will be a real nice machine.

+1 on the mobo choice.

And you could pick up corsair memory for even cheaper, 4GB.

My other thought for the motherboard was the GIGABYTE GA-P35-DS3L LGA 775 Intel P35 ATX All Solid Capacitor Intel Motherboard. At newegg, a lot of people liked it.

If you put two 8800GT cards in a Sonata, and they have single-slot coolers too, you'll be able to fry eggs in it. Those cards are hot and the single slot coolers don't even kick the heat out of the case.

The 500W PSU is a bit smallish for 8800GT SLI IMO.

If you really want SLI go with a 780i motherboard, not 750i. It will allow x16 speed on both cards.

Get a SATA burner, e.g. SH-S203B. The IDE cables are a pain to manage and impede airflow.

I'd say go with the Sonata, GA-P35-DS3L, a single 8800GTS G92 512MB and 2x2GB of DDR2-800.

aevm,

Thanks for the good advice. I'm probably going to go with what you recommended.
