Maxtor HD electronics failure

Hello,
I have a friend's HD with sensitive data in it (3 years of transactions) from a friend.
Electronic des not even answer the BIOS ainquiry about name and config. neither the motor is making any noise at all.

The HD is a: Maxtor DiamondMax 10
model 6L160P0
160GB PATA 133
code BAJ41G20
DIC 2005

May i try to get the same electronic board on it and replace it?
Am i putting the data at risk by doing this test?

Have a look at http://hdd-parts.com/ , if you contact them with all the part numbers you can find (and serial number), they'll probably be able to match a replacement card.
