Hard drive question plz help

Hello,
I have a 500 GB SATA HDD on my current computer and I was wondering if I could transfer that hard drive so I don't have to redo everything on it. I am asking this cause some ppl say that you can't transfer HDDs to new hardware and some say they can so...im confused.
