I need to build a server for work that will run W2K, Exchange 2k3, SQL Server, and pretty much any other server side software. It will support approx. 250 people and I have a $3000 limit. So far this is what I was thinking. Any comments would be appriciated.

ASUS MB
Intel Xeon 3070
4 GB Kingston RAM
GeForce 8400GS
Case / PSU
400GB HDD x2
CD/DVD
Floppy

Thats about $1209...so I have room to grow.

Why do you even need a GPU for a server? It's a waste of money.

Spend the money on RAM. 4G is not enough for 250 people, especially if you're running SQL Sevrer.

Also you probably want to have a quad core CPU - it depends on how many concurrent users you need to support.

Get 3 HDD for a RAID 5. Or even better, get 4 HDD for a RAID 10. Your DB sill run that much faster.

^ Agreed. Get a low powered 3450/8400GS or even a new VIA, no need for a 9600 in a server. Get a better PSU. I recommend Corsair or PP&C. For your needs a Corsair 450/550VX should be more than enough.

So get 4 HDD in raid 10
Intel Xeon X3220
Case
PSU
8 GB RAM

For a total of: $2105

Look good?
