alright, so which will be better for gettin ddr1066 to run at good speeds / at spec?

a q6700 at 300 or 333x10 on x38

or q6600 333x9 on x38.

im trying to get either the 9850 and game, or the older intel quads that should still last a while yet for 250 or so. the q6700 is like 275, not too shabby for that 10x multi!!! i am thinking a mild all day every day oc at 333 fsb, so no maximum overkill. which would be best settings for the ram, and the best 4gb kit for this sort of overclock? thanks for the help in advance!!!

Yes, assuming the RAM is running in dual-channel mode, just set the memory bus speed to 1/2 the FSB datarate. So, for 1333MHz FSB datarate, set the memory bus to DDR2-667 speed.

It's pretty close in terms of what speed to run your RAM at but if you're looking at a 333 fsb speed I'd say go 667, at least that way you're underclocking your RAM and that'd let you tighten up the timings a bit more.

As far as 6600 vs 6700 goes, I'd say take the 6600. It overclocks well and the extra you'd pay for the 6700 just wouldn't justify the gain. The G0 q6600 runs perfectly happy at 3 GHz (333x9), and tends not to complain at 3.3 GHz (333x9) either. My own one's running at 3.6 GHz (400x9) and hasn't given me any trouble in the last 6 months (except for having to feed it more juice when I put in my 3rd and 4th sticks of ram...)

Could have sworn the q6600 was cheaper than that though.

219 is q6600...275 is 6700. i dont want 667 ram for gaming...too slow almost. i think 1066 or 1200 would benefit more for gaming.

That's the common misperception. Remember, though, that with this Intel architecture, all data to/from RAM has to go through the FSB as well as the memory bus. Thus, whichever is slower will bottleneck the transfer. These days, the FSB is usually slower, so there's really no point to buying RAM faster than DDR2-800 unless you plan on OCing your FSB faster than 1600MHz.

so a 4gb kit for ddr800 is better for a board that is native 1066? i was plannin on a 1200 spec 4gb kit to pop in there, but i guess native doesnt mean anything, just a selling point then i guess

I would just go with some low timing 800MHz ram and run the Q6600 at 400x6 (for default) or 400x8 or 9 for overclock (3.2GHz or 3.6GHz).

PC1066 ram is nice but you will not get much extra speed from it due to the FSB limiting the transfer of the data. Faster ram is nice if you want to go above the 400x9 max multiplier but then you may come across the FSB wall at about 480MHz.

maybe some tracers? i know they have good ram but not sure if they still have d9 on there to run low tight timings. that stuff i have seen overclock to about 1160mhz, some even higher!! thanks for the help and info, keep on truckin!!!
