Hello,
I was looking for advice about a graphics card.

Info:

Currently i have an nVidia Geforce 8400GS.
My computer is a Advent T9610 with a 405W PSU.
3GB Ram
Core 2 Duo Q6600.

I was thinking of buying an 8800GT 512mb by XFX. Which needs a power supply to it, if i bought this, would it be compatible with my 405W PSU, as i know it can physically fit into my computers motherboard but not sure if the power supply would work with it.

The only reason that i want this graphics card is because my friend said he will sell it very cheap to me, like £50!
So i thought id research about this product before having any more problems.

Thanks in advance.
Declan :)

Personally I wouldn't want to chance it, but if you have two spare 'rails' i.e leads with molex connectors and are only running one HDD and one optical drive then you may just get away with it although any thoughts of overclocking should be put firmly on hold until a more powerful PSU is fitted.

This is easy to answer. Look at the specs printed on the side of your current power supply. There will be an entry for how many amps it produces on the 12V rail. Then compare that to what the video card specs say it requires.

And allow for overestimates, underestimates and plain old lying. [:mousemonkey:1]

Thanks for the replies i will follow this up now and have a look inside my PC.

I think i will most probably wait until i can afford a new PSU and buy a better one with more Watts, is there anything else i need to consider when buying a new PSU?

Thanks again.

Nvidia says 450w@26amps
Evga says 400w@22amps for my 8800GT SC (remember @ stock clocks)
I went with a 470w@26amps (with a 65w cpu-stock clocks)
You have a Q6000 @ 95w @ stock clocks Edit: or is it an E6600 you have?

My suggestion would be to upgrade your psu to one that has 30amps or more and a dedicated pcie connector.

Its a Q6600 for sure.
