built my new system in january, everything ran fine. then two weeks ago, i decided to do some cable management. so i finish with the cable management, check to make sure everything is all plugged in and snug, but not too snug. everything seems fine, so i turn it on, and the second i turn the comp on, the sata power connector and dvd sata power port start to smoke like crazy. immediatly shut off the power, and pulled out the plug. here are the photo's of what happened.
i have since replaced the Combo drive, and everything has been working fine. my question is, why the f**k did this happen, and can it have screwed up more than just the combo drive?

The SATA power plug is keyed so it's almost impossible to have mismatched contacts unless something was bent in the plug.
Or something gone wrong in the LG drive.
Kudos for the photos tho. Yours' the first case I've seen.
FYI, I've seen it on molex plugs, but this is the first case with SATA power plug. I guess anything can happen with those power plugs. If it's plugged securely and is not loose, then any other thing happens is beyonf your control obviously.

do you think it might have been a hair or some dust that got cought between the connectors?
Giving a patchy/intermittent connection? It certainly is possible.

and is it safe to keep running my system?
Your problem is extreme rare. I don't see why not if nothing else has been damaged.
