Hello, I have a laptop for which i would like to upgrade the hdd. Knowing that i would need to install the operating system on to the new hard drive, how do i do that without the manufacture giving me recovery cd's. The computer has windows vista basic, and i was wondering if there was a way that i could copy the recovery partition on the old hard drive onto the new hard drive, so that i may install the operating system. OR should i just ghost the entire old drive and then put it on the new one?

What's your laptop? On my XPS, I was able to back-up the recovery software by setting my Windows Explorer to show hidden and system files. A directory appeared that contained all the recovery files, and that's what I copied to an external hard disk before downgrading the laptop to XP.

Make a image or clone the drive using Ghost or Acronis TrueImage.
You will need a USB external hard drive.
