4200+ 939 OC problems, need help

CPU: AMD 4200+ 939 (2200mHz)
MoBo: asus a8n-e
MEM: 2 gigs ddr400 2.5-3-3-8 (4x512mb corsair valueselect)
Graphics: XFX Nvidia geForce 8800GT 512 XXX
PSU: Nox apex 800w (brand new)

I'm kinda new to overclocking, I'm trying to OC the CPU to 2530 (11x230)
So far I've lowered the HT to 4x, disabled the Cool n Quite, incresed the timings (3-4-4-8) and mem volt (1.70) and the cpu volt to 1.3875.

I've ran Memtest86 for 4.5hours and prime95 for almost 7h and no errors occurred, the cpu temps max at 54ºC, and the volts stay within the +-5% range. All values are measured using Hardware Monitor software.

So far so good. The thing is, when I'm gaming the game closes unexpectedly and sometimes the windows' blue screen appears and the pc reboots.

Can someone help me with this?

Thanks

Try Dropping your front-side-bus to 227. Seems like the 754 & 939 sockets don't handle 230 or more very well. That should still keep you around 2.5 and a good steady 12 to 13% OC.

Ok, i'll give it a go.
Although I've seen in other forums people go up to 2.7 using 939sockets

Just one quick correction, my mem volt is 2.70 not 1.70 as mentioned above.

The article is more focused on the performance increase and benchmarks results when OCing.
One thing I've noticed is the volts the use.
I'll also try increasing the cpu voltage.

Thanks

No problem, I've raised the cpu volt to 1.425, it seems to have stabilized in game, no problems for the last hour.

I didn't raise the voltage from the beginning because I've seen many forums where people claim to achive 2.5 with stock voltage...

Doesn't seem to work for me.

Nevertheless, something bugs me, how come no errors where found when testing the system with the OC tools? Aren't those tools supposed to be more sensitive than games or other software?

By the way, if someone thinks I'm doing something wrong please let me know... I'm kinda worried that this voltage for long periods of time might fry my cpu.

thanks

Ok, problem not solved...
No OC no problems, when OCing game freezes, closes...

I've increased cpu volt to 4.375v

I'll try to decrease the oc although I think 2.5 is not too much.

Anyone has any suggestion?

Thanks

You may have to lower the ram frequency... to ddr 333 instead of 400.

Run cpu-z to see where the ram is at. 460(230) may be too much for the value ram.

I had it in ddr400 on purpose.

Nevertheless I gave it a try and it didn't solve the problem...

So I thought to test the one thing I hadn't... the MoBo

I lowered the cpu clock the mem to 333 and raised the fsb to 250
result: pc didn't boot... at 235 memtest86 detected an error a few seconds from start and simply froze.

I'm assuming this means the MoBo is the limiting factor... is there anything else I can do or is this the point where I give up? Honestly I was expecting more from as asus AI series... So now I've lowered the fsb to 225 and will test.

Thanks

I may be wrong, but I don't think memtest86 stresses your system much...just tests whether or not the info sent is the same as info received....try using something like video card stability test, or a cpu stress test...bet that'll crash you out same as the game ;)

btw i'd tighten the ram timings back up...better to have lower latency and slower clock if you ask me...if it was stable running that way anyway.

I'd try running another stressing utility like i was saying above and see if that crashes your pc, if not the problem may lie elsewhere....unless of course you had no bsod's before oc'ing. ;)

Hi, Even I have the same socket. I have 3000+ Venice with ASUS A8N-E.
Currently, I am running my CPU at 289x9, whereas the stock core is 200x9, without any problems.
First of all, try disabling USB Legacy support, ASUS 939s don't clock very well with that feature enabled and I am hoping that you have the latest BIOS Firmware (for A8N-E it's 1013). Try downloading nVidia's ntune. It's a great application if you wanna OC your CPU only upto 25%. Plus it also helps you find out stable RAM timmings and load more.
Are you using a Divider for your RAM? which one? What's the stock voltage for your CPU?

nVidia ntune

I'm sorry I haven't replied to your posts but I've been moving to another house...

To business:

- WiZdoM
I've never had any problems with stock configuration.
I've ran Passmark burnin test for 6hours and it didn't detect any errors...
i don't know if this is a good stress test, If anyone knows of a better one please let me know.

- thedevilisinme
Yes, I do have the latest BIOS version.
The RAM divider is set to 400mHz.
The info in AMDs site to the CPU voltage is 1.30V1.35V
I am now trying your suggestion, have disabled USB Legacy support and will see what happens.

I have a x2 3600 ,skt 939 , I think it is the same core as the 4200 ,and I have it clocked from 2 - 2.2 ghz , I have found that although it will go higher it is very stable with a 200 mhz increase , I would advise you to do the same , i.e don't go over 2.4 ghz ,or a 10 percent increase

A couple things to try, reduce your memory clock to DDR333, and drop your HT multi to 3x. That should open some room up for you. Dont jump clear to 250 right out of the gate, try something a bit more conservative like 235.

The nForce4 can do over 300Mhz (see CPU-Z validation in my sig) so its really a matter of getting you some headroom in the settings.

also I have noticed that if i jump the FSB it wont post or if it does I'll bsod right before i get in, But if I raise it in increments of 5-7 MHZ it will work and get to that high point where i need to up the Vcore

no just pissed it off to hot so no go or i jumped the fsb or multi to much at one time. IDK whats up w/my proc but it is very picky.
like i said "I have noticed that if i jump the FSB it wont post or if it does I'll bsod right before i get in, But if I raise it in increments of 5-7 MHZ it will work and get to that high point where i need to up the Vcore "

I know i can get it to at least 3.5 but it's not very stable unless ambiant temp in the room is about 20F I could prob go higher too but i dont like being cold.

I'm quite a noob...
I'm assuming bsod is something like blue screen or sudden boot or something, could you tell me what it stands for? thanks

As for the event viewer I don't know where to see that...

Sorry for my noobness!!!!

Thanks for the info! Now I'm a little wiser :)

Good news is that my rig seems to have stabilized, currently I'm at 230*11 and mem at 333mHz, will try to go a little higher when I have time.

Thanks all for the tips!
