No sound for 3 year old windows vista laptop

Hello,
drivers are up to date. volume says working both on ico on tray and through contol panel. still no sound and i want to watch movies! works when connected to tv.

Is this a recent event, ie worked a few days ago ? Was there a Windows update applied, then it stopped working ? - Restore windows prior to update, or roll back Audio driver in device manager. Also make sure the Windows Audio Service is set to automatic, and started. If you have already tried all this, you could have saved me some typing, by saying so up front :lol:
