I'm thinking of getting the Panasonic 42" ED (PD50U). I've seen HD content
on it and it looks great. My question goes to SD tv viewing.

I figure I'll be using DirecTv's HD receiver with TiVo. Gotta love the
TiVo. :-) I'd also like to use the HDMI connection. Is this going to be
the best for the basic DSS feed? In researching this issue, I've seen
claims that low-level connections - even RCA - are better for SD content on
an ED/HD tv. Yes/no?

TIA

Hi Brooke

Purchasing an EDTV in 2005 that can't display HD 720p/1080i is pretty
much analogous to purchasing a record player in 1955 that doesn't have
a microgroove needle for playing Long Playing 33 1/3 recordings. In
1955 who knew that 78 rpm records were careening towards obsolescence?

At least we know definitively that in 2005 any television that is
restricted to the EDTV 480p standard should be trucked
straight from the manufacturing plant to the scrap heap !!

Since you have not purchased a High Definition set as of yet, I would
wait a year until the 1080p HDTV sets began appearing
that will take advantage of the HD-DVD 1080p players that will soon be
available.

This new 1080p standard should be defacto for a very long time.
Goodness knows the 1941 war time 480i NTSC standard lasted quite
awhile.

Don't listen to the salesperson. In 2005, EDTV isn't where you wanna
be.

Maybe and maybe not. In any case waiting a year only guarantees that
the next year will bring even more innovation in some area. If he
waits long enough he can just forget it because he'll be dead.

Since there's no such thing as EDTV...only SD and HD, it's a meaningless
question.
The only thing this set will do is bump 480i (ntsc) to 480p and
downgrade everything else to the same level.
BTW HDMI is a DIGITAL connection...480i is ANALOG. It improves NOTHING
Use the S video connection.
