After doing a Hot Sync, the basic "four-banger" calculator on my Palm
m105 no longer works.

When I tap on the calculator icon, I get the following error message:

Launch error
The application cannot be launced because it is missing localization
information

When I click on the "OK" button on the error screen, I'm taken to the
"General" screen of the "Preferences" program. Everything *seems*
normal there. (The only thing that seems applicable is the "Numbers"
format specifier - I'm using "1,000.00".

In addition, I've discovered that selecting the "Buttons" screen of
the "Preferences" program causes a "Fatal Alert - Fatal Exception". I
have to do a soft reset to clear this.

Finally, the HotSync log says:
System synchronization failed
Protocol Error: Handheld file could not be opened. (4004)

If I do a hard reset, the basic calculator and "Buttons" screen work,
but as soon as I do a HotSync, the problems reappear.

I'm guessing that the "System synchronization failed" error is the
key, but I don't know what to do about it.

Any ideas?

Go into your backup folder and delete the saved preferences file. Then
hotsync, and everything should work. Any registration info for programs
you've registered will likely be lost, so make sure you have that information
somewhere before you do this.

Thanks for the help here, and on my other problem as well!

I do weekly backups to an external hard drive, so if this doesn't work,
I'll probably just restore the entire Backup folder from last week's
backup, and try again.

Oops, I wrote too fast.

Deleted the saved preferences file C:\Program
Files\Palm\PownallB\Backup\Saved_Preferences.PRD, then did a HotSync,
but all the problems mentioned in the original post are still present.

The only differences is that I no longer have a Saved_Preferences.PRC
file in the Backup folder.

Any further ideas? Or is it time to go get last week's backup?

That's probably the easiest. Something else in the backup is messing things
up, and it may not be worth the time required to find it. You would have to
keep doing hotsyncs after deleting one file.

Then get a backup program and back up to your SD card every day, religiously.
I use BackupMan, and have it do a backup every morning while I'm asleep. I
keep 4 previous backups, just in case. You can set that for any number
between 0 and the number that will fit on your card. You can also keep as
many manual backups as you have space for. There are also other backup
programs available. Get whichever works best for you, but you're grossly
negligent if you don't get something. The backup to a separate hard drive is
also good insurance, and I keep a backup of the SD card on my PC, and about
once a week I back it up to a rewritable CDR. No matter how many backups you
have, it will eventually be one too few. ;-)

I would agree, Stan, except that the M105 doesn't have an expansion slot.
No SD cards (or any others). Just the serial port.

A question: is there a way to backup the M105 to the PC? I know Palm's
software does that, almost. But not quite - the groups / categories,
button assignments, sound settings and other items don't get restored, so
if my M105 crashes and I resync, I get to go into Preferences and manually
reenter all that. Heck, even WinCE 1.0 did better than that!

Thanks to all -

Jim Horn (my WinCE C120+ is parked; my M105 is in my pocket)

As another poster pointed out, the m105 has only the serial port, so no
SD cards.

I went and got the Calculator.PRC,Calculator_enUS.PRC and
Saved_Preferences.PRC files from last week's backup (made before I
started having problems), added them to the Quick Install list, and did
a HotSync.

I still have the same problems.

Do I need to get different files? (All the above, plus ???, Not the
above, instead get ???)

I need to try restoring one file at a time, until I hit the right one?

Help!

Yes, and that's one reason my M105 is in a drawer somewhere. The failed
backup capacitor is the other reason.

BackupBuddy is supposed to do a full backup and restore from the PC. I
haven't tried it, but I think you can get a free trial version and see if
it works for you. N.B., BackupBuddy and BackupBuddyVFS are different
programs, albeit from the same company. The VFS program backs you Palm up
to an SD card, and BackupBuddy backs it up to the PC. You'll need
something that works pretty well when the backup capacitor fails (not if,
when) and your device is wiped out when you change batteries. With a full
M105 and serial speeds, it takes almost a full battery charge just to do a
complete hotsync. Not good news, I know, but that has been my experience.

Yes, I forgot we were talking about an M105.

I would do a hard reset and try restoring that entire backup. Just because
it stalls while displaying one app doesn't mean that's the bad app. It
very well could be the app just before that one that caused the problem.
Try restoring, completely, the last backup you have when you know the Palm
was working correctly. You may have a physical problem with the device,
not just a bad file, but that's difficult if not impossible to diagnose
from a newsgroup.
