You need to give more info. Is it a prebuilt system or a built system and what are the specs?

Was it working fine before you noticed this?

Did you install or uninstall something around the time this happened?

If its a built system then you need to give the exact model info of the parts (motherboard, power supply, memory and so forth)

Check your bios and make sure the multi is set to the highest. If not, then correct it. If so, then refer back to the above post.

It could easily be speedstep clocking down your processor when idle to save energy, the later P4s supported speedstep, I don't know about earlier ones.

it's a built system. The cpu is a p4 3.0 ghz 630 SL7Z9, a mad dog 430w psu, 2gbs of g.skill 533 memory, and a biostar p4m890 m7 te motherboard.

Speedstep is supported on that CPU I believe. You would have to disable it in your BIOS for your cpu to run a constant 3gs.

Run CPUZ and watch the frequency of the cpu and see if it ramps up and down when you start tasks. If it does this then it should be the speedstep causing this.

The 6X0 series of P4' supported Speedstep. The P4 running at 1.5Ghz is normal with Speedstep enabled.

I checked the multiplier and set it to its highest and it went back to 3.0ghz then i set it back and its still at 3.0 ghz so i guess it fixed itself.

But if it happens again I will disable speedstep. plus thx for the help guys I greatly appreciate it.

Not a problemo...

Unless you really are going to push it all the time, I suggest keeping Speedstep enabled. They weren't called "Preshots" for no good reason.

Speedstep has no negative effect on performance, just lowers heat and power use while idle, so I'd keep it on. When your CPU starts to gain load it clocks back up to 3GHz immediately anyway.
