I am having a multitude of issues with this new install. Purchased this below:

New
GA-EP35-DS3L Mobo
MSI GeForce 8800GTS
E8400 CPU
2x 1 Gig Crucial Ballistic Tracer Memory (DDR2-800)
600W Apevia PSU
SATA 20x DVD-ROM drive

Old
I am using my old ATA Harddrive (ATA right?, not SATA) with Windows already installed on it
3.5 Floppy (IDE?)

Hooked everything up very carefully (this is my first build). Everything started up ok...sort of :non:

It never gets to windows, but rather goes to the black screen saying
Run in Safe Mode
Last good configuration
Start windows normally
etc.

I have tried all options and it continues to go back to the same screen.

I talked to a buddy of mine who had me then use my windows disk, boot from the windows disk up to the point of verifying the license, which I accept and eventually do a repair to windows. I was happy because things started to seem like they were loading, booting, etc.. but I get an error now saying file asms needs to be loaded from the windows disk, but i cant use the drive D that comes up to find the file and if I click cancel, it restarts and back to square one.

I probably rambled a lot and this may be confusing, but if anyone has any suggestions, I would love to hear them

Quick Questions (maybe related):
1. I was under the impression I would not need to get a new harddrive and that my old one would work.. is this true?
2. Is it wierd having a ATA Harddrive and a SATA DVD-Drive, forgive me if my lingo is wrong on this, but i think youll know what I mean.

Instead of repairing windows try REINSTALLING it...should work fine.

Well forgive me if I'm a dummy, but I thought that by re-installing windows, I would have to format my hard drive... something I was trying to avoid due to all of my existing files.

I might go get a new hard drive tonight, but still want to keep my old one and at the very least get my files off of it.

Yes you would have to format...but not your entire HD...just the partition where you install windows.....

Maybe I missed where he said it was partitioned. If it is one partition, hes screwed.

@op your best bet is to get a new drive and instal windows on it, then you can run your other drive for storage, or transfer your important stuf to the new drive.

To do it the way you tried, you would of needed to uninstall old mobo drivers off the HDD before transfering it. Even then it might have been buggy. I never recommend transfering to a new system without a format/install. To many headaches.

Yea I was worried this would happen, it isnt so much of a trouble for me to re-format as it is for my brother. He actually bought a new 500GB Seagate SATA drive, but he is running into issues where if he just has that new drive installed.. the bios just does not recognize it and then if he tries what I am doing, he gets the same problems going that I am having.

So.. I guess lets refresh here for my sanity:

Seems like
1. I need to either reformat my HD, which I am sure is not partitioned or get a new HD and load windows there?
2. If I get a New Hard Drive and install windows on it.. can I still use my old Hard Drive and the files on it (like cloning or something?)

3. Why can't the stuff just work...dammit :)

On a good note.. the inside of the computer is a colorful lightshow, the lights on that RAM are pretty sweet.. I didnt even realize it had lights when I bought them lol... Lets hope I dont see fireworks though :)

You can get a new one and use it for your main and access everything off the other HDD no problem.

Your brother needs to make sure his bios isnt trying to run in SATA or ACHI Mode. He needs to set his bios to IDE mode if he is using XP. Its a driver issue known to XP, Vista doesnt have the issue.

^ as he said.

You could also try connecting your HD to your bros Pc, transferring all the important stuff from your HD to your bro's HD and then later installin windows in your HD.

Consider this a lesson my friend. Backup your data because a new mobo likely means a reinstall of your OS. I went from an MSI Neo4 board to the same mobo you have and for some reason my OS booted up just fine...but that is the first time I have EVER seen that happen.

Well it is my first build, so bound to learn all kinds of things. I had not bought a new hard drive mainly because I was being told that I would be able to use my existing one and be able to access the information on it without much headache, but my bottle of advil is running low :)

Its ok though, I needed a couple days break from WoW anyways lol.

I am going to buy the same SATA HDD my brother got from overpriced Best Buy and work from that angle tonight. I just hope we can figure out the issues hes having with the SATA HDD.

He told me he is not running it in SATA or ACHI mode, but would double check that tonight. I pulled up a website called "Partitioning and Formatting for the installation of Windows 2000/XP" and sub section called Installing Windows 2000/XP on a new SATA drive.

http://www.pcstats.com/articleview [...] 78&page=10

In this article it says:
Begin the Windows 2000/XP installation process by powering on your system, inserting the operating system CD and pressing any key to boot from the CD when prompted.

As soon as the Windows 2000/XP installation process starts (blue screen), there will be a small prompt at the bottom of the screen which says 'Press F6 if you need to install a third party SCSI or RAID driver.' Hit F6 right away, preferably more than once.

The installation process will continue, and eventually you will be prompted for those additional drivers. Insert your SATA driver floppy disk (which will have come with your motherboard) into the FDD drive, then hit 'S' to specify additional devices. The installation process will search for the driver files on the disk and display a list. Select the correct device then hit ENTER to continue the installation as normal. The drive will be partitioned and formatted as part of the install process. You can now install Windows as normal.

If Serial ATA drive support is native to the motherboard chipset, you do not need to provide drivers during the installation procedure. Any recent Intel and AMD chipset will support SATA fully.

This explains what he is going through, but the problem is that the MOBO did not come with a Floppy Disk to do as told on this site. So I am kind of unsure whats happening.

I finally got everything working as it should.

I did not get anew hard drive.. well I did but I never installed it since I finally was able to get the old one working properly. Seems all we had to do was erase all the information in the old windows folders and just reload Windows.

All of my old data was these and readable, though some things were sort of hidden. Also, I had to reinstall a lot of my programs, but that was simple enough.

Anyways, thanks for all your help on the issues I was having.
