I've decided that it's about time to build a new PC considering the one i have is four years old and just can't cut it anymore. Sadly i haven't been paying much attention to the new technology over the past half a year or so and i need help picking a processor. I really don't do anything currently but play games and i was thinking about getting a Core 2 Duo E8400 processor but i have a few questions.

The main question i have is.. is this the right processor for me to get on a mid level budget (somewhere in the $700 range)

Secondly why is the E8400 processor cheaper than the E6850?

Any help would be appreciated

I would go with the E8400 as it is more future proof & gives you more overclocking headroom .etc

that's pretty much what i figured but why is the 8400 so much cheaper than the 6850?

the 8400 runs cooler, is a better overclocker, and has more cache
