Hello group,

I have an RCA D52W20 HDTV. When zooming my analog cable to its native 4:3
settings, I get the typical bars on the left/right. The bars are a light
grey. Is there a way to change this?

There may be, but why?
Grey bars are better since they even out phosphor burn.

No.

RCA chose to use grey bars to minimize the chance of burn-in.

Ahh...thanks for the answers to both of you. I guess it just takes a little
getting used to.

Thanks again,

KCBS-HD in Los Angeles shows light gray bars when showing SD programs.
Other HD stations have black bars. Personally I prefer the gray as less
distracting.

Broadcasters and some other video sources like cable / satellite boxes
deliberately use gray rather than black for letter-boxing. The intent is to
reduce the risk of uneven "burn-in" of CRT or plasma TV phosphors. The
choice of gray provides an average brightness which is roughly equal to the
surrounding picture, thereby making the phosphor surface wear / burn
uniformly.

As a side benefit, some people, including me (and apparently Bill below)
prefer it.
