First off thanks for taking the time to review this thread I know there are dozens of them asking for review. I want to make sure I am not making any critical mistake in this build since my wife only lets me build a new system about every 5 years (ya I know sad isnt it). This will be my 5th system in 20 years. I have a limited budget of around $1200 so that played into my build alot. I mostly use my system for playing games both online and off and watching movies. Mostly online games like SWG, WOW, and will be doing the new Age of Conan, offline games are a mix of new stuff like Airborn and such. I am going to build a 64 bit Vista system with 8 gigs of ram.

So here is where I am at:

Its all personal choice....but atm stick with Intel. They are whooping AMDs but. Switch the Processor to a Q6600. If you need Crossfire then ull need an X38 board. Or switch to a 3870x2 and get a P35 board (Asus P5K-E)

Do u need 8 gigs of ram....its a little overkill. 4 is good in 2x2, and then u can leave urself open to upgrade.

Everything else looks fine

Actually, I'm glad to see somebody still likes AMD. Once AMD dies we're all going to buy Intel CPUs once in 5 years or in 10 years, at $1000 to $2000 each, and nVidia's video cards will cost between $800 and $4000. Just guessing, of course.

True, for $200 you can get a faster CPU (Q6600), but then you'd need a more expensive motherboard (X38) to do Crossfire properly. Also, with this setup you can add a third 3870 later, which you can't do with the X38. My feeling is that your machine will need lots of GPU power, not so much CPU power, and the Phenom 9550 will not be a limiting factor.

I think dropping to 4 GB of RAM makes sense, unless you have a good reason to want more.

$40 more buys you a tier-1 PSU with more power:

It's worth it especially if you like the idea of adding a third video card later.

I've seen demos of Age of Conan on an 8800GTX, at 1680x1050. A bit choppy, IMO. I think that's a very demanding game. Or maybe it just was set to all the eye candy on max, I don't know... It did look great though

Edit: what about DVD burner or HDD? I like SH-S203B and WD6400AAKS these days.

The only reason to buy AMD is financially support the dying company. The one who's ruining the company should be the one to let go, instead of the 2 VP's. The wall is too thick so maybe Intel/IBM/nvidia should send a trojan horse (buyout offer; once bought out, then lay off the whole staff) in? :D

Pretty much what I would've picked out if I were to go AMD except for the psu. Pick out a tier 1/2/3:

BTW, you're keeping the pc for 5 years so 8GB is fine. Unlike you, we upgrade every 6-12 months. So we have low-ish memory.

AMD is decent chip especially if you don't really care about overclocking. Through all of my life I been using Intel and this year was the first time I used AMD chip I got to say I am please. And I might stick to AMD after all as long they will survive :) I hope so because I am quite happy with them. 8gb surre you won't have to upgrade for a while. PCU I think is overkill. 600w should be just fine. Get a good quality PCU don't go chip on that part. CPU do you need quad? If not get the 6400 black eddition its a very good performer. And now you can get it for 130.00
