Taiwan-based VIA Technologies is planning to adopt a 45nm process for the manufacture of its processors, and expects to launch dual-core CPUs by the end of 2009, according to sources at the company.

VIA has also revealed more details of its initial-launch Isaiah-based processor, which will feature a core frequency of 2GHz, a V4 Bus speed from 800-1333MHz, and two 64KB L1 cache and 1MB L2 cache pairs with 16-way associatively. The CPU will be manufactured by Fujitsu adopting a 65nm process. The CPU is pin compatible with the company's C7 processors.

VIA has forecast CPU shipments in 2008 to have an annual increase of around 20-30%, with shipments in the first half of 2008 to equal total shipments in 2007.

Oh goodie, another player !!

All good for the costumer. It will probably be used in Mini-itx boards aswell, or market another niche. But if it has muscle, more power to VIA.

Somehow I get the feeling that AMD will be competing with VIA in the end of 2009, instead of AMD competing with Intel...

This won't be a competer to Intel/AMD, rather an alternative. Via CPUs are good in very low power things.

They are nice and pretty stable. Their cheap and ussually they require low power aswell.
Buying a via CPU for a pc ? Probably not. But hey, informatics doesnt revolve only in super-charged riggs.
Check this one for example.

I strongly believe those cpus arent meant for desktop PCs, rather something like ultraportable multimedia thingies, nettops and other handheld devices

That's why I stipulated "for a PC."  You don't need to shoot me if I buy it to control a robot, environmental control system, "smart" toy, or similar device.

Via CPU's aren't meant to compete in the performance market, they are low power cost effective solutions.
