Partition a 500GB HD?

Is it advisable to partition a 500gb HD, leaving smaller partition for the C and rest for other drives? 16MB cache HD. Or does it not effect the overall performance

OS+app should always be on it's own smaller partition, around 60-80GB will do. You use the other remaining partition space to keep more permanent data so when you do a reformat (or if Windows screws up) you won't lose all data, just ones in the OS+app partition.
