Desktop freeze

Windows XP desktop freezes when exiting programs. Also some of windows applications load very slowly. The windows search icon is displayed for 10 seconds or more while loading the control panel, search or help utilities. I am using Mcafee security suite and fixcleaner for security virus and malware protection. These programs show a clean system. Also desktop icons are blanked out for at least a minute when leaving programs. When the icons fill in the system operates fine. Can anyone help?

Solution

The error message is because you missed a space between sfc and /

If you've done the scans and cleanup I mentioned, you should be seeing a noticeable improvement.

The drivers for the board came with a disk. The disk is labled Intel-Via IV8237S-12b Version 1.2b 15G09X045004AK. I will go to Asrock and input the information and see if upgraded drivers are available. Thanks for the information!

Assuming some driver issues aren't the issue, let's try to do some system optimization.

Get rid of those malware tools. Run through the malware guide in my signature.

In addition to the registry tool from ccleaner (listed in the malware guide), it can do a system wide garbage cleanup.

Check to see if there are any hard drive errors, and repair them if there are.
start-->run-->chkdsk /r

Check to see if the system files are good.
start-->run-->sfc /scannow

Those are some routine maintenance procedures. If the problem still persists, then we can go from there.

I have a fresh install of the first version of windows XP, pre Service pack 1. This is the same software that I purchased in 2001. All essential updates and service pack upgrades have been made. There are currently no malware programs installed
except McAfee security suite. The suggestion of running a system files check brought back an unable to find file error message
(start-->run-->sfc/scannow). Chkdsk/r was clean. I am going to install Fix Cleaner from Slimware Utilities. Inc. which I have used in the past. I believe it works fine for optimum performance. All previous symtems remain the same.

The error on the sfc/scannow was not a syntax error but mine. I did not run it from the cmd atmosphere. Sorry for the confusion. Scan came back clean. System is more stable now, but still leaves icons unfilled on desktop after leaving some programs. It does however fill in sooner and the screen does not freeze for long. Thanks for all the help.
