Gents:

I want to build the fastest computer possible for floating-point calculations, for under $1000 ( excluding monitor ). It needs throughput say x10 faster than the AMD6400+. Is this kit doable ?

10x times than the flagship CPU from AMD?

It could be doable, if the floating point could been done with the help of the GPU.

Linux or Windows OS?
Is your floating-point calculation software multi-threaded?
Does your floating-point calculation software support networked CPUs?
In your budget range 10x faster than X2 6400+ isn't realistic.
You might squeeze out 1.5-2x faster but I doubt it unless your software supports multiple networked PCs. 1 X2 6400+ PC plus 2 new $500 PCs in a 3 system network would be the best use of a $100 upgrade but only if the software supports networked PCs.

Q6600 (Quad Core)
2 GB Corsair
8600GTS
500 GB HDD Seagate
Samsung SH-203B
Corsair HX-520
Antec 900

You can overclock the Quad Core if you like.
Look at the CPU charts, if you want to spend more on a processor.

The Q6600 is definitely the BEST price/performance for you atm.

Grab a Tuniq Tower 120 CPU cooler and overclock the heck out of it; you should be able to get 3.4 pretty easily.

TonyP is right, you will want help from your GPU. Look at the 8800 GTS (G92) or the 9800 GTX. They should do you fine, as well as keeping you within your $1000 budget.

As for the rest of the system...

Cooler Master Centurion 534 ATX Case

Gigabyte P35-DS3R motherboard

Crucial Ballistix memory

Corsair 550 VX/650 TX power supply

Seagate 7200.11 hard drive

This should end up around $1000. Priced on newegg.
