I hava a 320GB WD SATA HD and it was running perfectly till some time back. Gradually, it started giving problems. Nowadays, it doesn't get recognized by the BIOS easily and I have to restart again and again till by luck, it gets recognized. Once the OS is loaded though, it runs perfectly.
Also, I can tell when it won't be recognized by a series of clicks of sorts(it seems like the HD goes on and off) and it goes in a pattern of 6 clicks, pause, 2 clicks, pause and 2 clicks.
A person I know in hardware suggested I change the SATA data cable but that didn't help either.
I'm not sure if it spins or not but I can hear as thought it revs up but then it dies down. This happens a few times and each time it dies down the aforementioned click sound is heard
Any ideas?
Also, I've not run a chkdsk as yet because I'm not sure if that would cause data loss. If you could also provide info on which type of chkdsk to run like /f or /r or other, it would be helpful.
Hard drive should not make any clicking sound at all might be on the way out, down load the diag program from WD's site and allow it to make a floppy then run it,you can check file disk from within windoze right click on properties, tools, and follow your nose to check files..
Thanks for the reply. The click is more like a switch going off...
and I know that you can chkdsk from windows, what I'd like to know is if it may cause data loss.
When my hard drive started making noise, it died a few weeks later.
It think when it wouldn't boot anymore, I could still put it in a different computer and get the data off it. I'd back up stuff to be safe. You can get a 500GB drive for about $50, so it's not expensive to do.
