Hi,

I have tried every suggestion posted on the web about fixing system restore in windows xp and nothing has worked as yet. The last thing I tried was to go to C:\windows\inf and found sr.inf, right clicked it and clicked install. It said I needed my xp service pack 3 cd to find sr.sys . The cd was in d drive but it did nothing. It kept telling me to enter the path, but I can't find those files on the cd to enter a path. Can anyone help me figure out what the path could be? I did a search on d:\ drive for sr.sys and it found nothing. Ready to scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks in advance.

What SP does your install CD have?

If it's not working, it can be caused by a few different things.

If it's being caused by a registry error, you can try downloading ccleaner, and running the registry tool. You may need to run it several times to resolve all the issues.

It could be cause by malware. If that's the case, you may want to run through the malware guide in my signature.

It can be caused by a damaged windows install. In that case, a windows repair should solve it. Here's a guide on how to do that.

Thanks for replying. The cd works, I could do the whole sp3 installation but I would rather not at this time. Windows wants the sr.sys file from the sp3 cd but I don't know the path to type in order for windows to go there. I can extract files from the cd to c:\ and see that it is there under the i386 folder, as it extracts these files to the c: drive. But windows will not go there to retrieve them. The problem I have with repairing windows is that this computer was given to me by my step son and I don't have the xp cd to allow me to start the computer with the cd. See the mess I have? The person who invented these things must be the son of the guy who invented golf!

If your disc doesn't have the SP that your system is running, you'll need to slipstream that SP into the recovery disc. It's a fairly simple process. Just download nlite to create your own disc. Then download SP2 or SP3, and include it in the disc that you create. Then you should be able to use that disc to repair the system restore.
