Hello,

As the subject of this thread states, I've been out of the loop of the new technologies for some time now. My current pc compromises of parts such as Intel P4 E and Radeon 9800 Pro...

Now is the time for the upgrade and I need help to choose which video card and mother board setup to go with and would like some guidance on making a decision.

I have narrowed down to two options:

Geforce 9800 GTX (just one card) with an EVGA Nforce 750I SLI.
Or
Dual His Radeon HD 3870 ICEQ3 with an ASUS P5E LGA775 X38 Crossfire.

Bot setup uses the PCIe 2.0

Basically, should I got with Nvidia or ATi? If you have any suggestions as to a better seupt, please le me know.

Thank you,
Mike

Get a x38 board if you want good overclocking. 750i's fsb performance is underwhelming. 2 3870 is faster than 1 9800gtx, but neither of them are good value. You might as well get one 8800gt or g92 8800gts, which perform almost as good as 9800, and wait to crossfire the new ati 4000s cards on x38 when they come out. Or spend the extra on better cpu.

I second getting an 88xx card. The 9800gtx is essentially an overclocked G92 GTS (not worth the price premium at all..). The 3870s will underperform in some cases (also really not worth the money now). The only time I would recommend getting a 3870 is if you have one already and want more performance.

Get a P35 or X38 Chipset for a new intel build; the nforce's competing options don't really come close to the performance of the intel solutions.
