I have decided to take the frugalest of routes and just update my processor and ram. My main board is an Asus P5LD2 and it claims that it will support the core2duo processors. Ram is the easy choice, but I wanted to make sure that the new 45 nm processors would work. I am looking at the e7200 wolfdale. It is replacing a very tired Pentium 4 630 @ 3.0 ghz (I know... I didn't know about this website when I first started building...) If the 45 nm is out of the question for the old mobo, I was also considering the e6600 conroe.
The computer itself will not be used too much for gaming - I used to play oblivion, but I don't imagine doing anything newer than that. The hardest thing that will press it will be my statistics programs (if you care: SPSS, MPLUS, AMOS, and Excel). I will also be doing a ton of multitasking (you know... the normal 20 pdf's open at the same time with word, 3 excell files, outlook, etc). I am looking to go with 4 gigs of ram and a new hard drive - 80 gigs is just not what it used to be.
The current setup is thus:
P4 630 @ 3.00
1 gig of ram (cheap-o)
80 gig hard-drive western digital
430 watt Power supply (came with the case)
Asus p5ld2 main board
EVGA 7600 GT video card
I would appreciate any input - I am looking to spend less than $400 on everything if possible
The P5LD2 945 will not support the e7200. Check your board revision for potential processor support with proper BIOS rev. MB Rev. 2 will support some 65nm C2D processors, but the 45nm Penryns are not on the list. I hope the link works.
If you have CPUZ installed, click on the 'motherboard' tab and see if your MB revision is listed. You would need a minimum of MB rev 2 to even install a C2D processor. Your stuck with Pentium D if you have a rev. 1 P5LD2. Rev. 1 boards do not have the proper hardware (voltage regulators) for C2D support. A simple BIOS update won't get you to C2D or Penryn with a rev. 1 board. The site is the ASUS product page for your P5LD2, CPUs supported.
The 945 was one of the earlier socket 775 MBs (945 chipset) that ASUS released later revisions 'hardware revisions' to support C2D. If you have a rev. 1 P5LD2 MB, it will not support C2D.

Sorry, I have been quoting the processor stepping revision when I should have been quoting the MB revision 2 needed for C2D support. Hope I did not confuse OP too much.
Revision 2 is an ASUS 945 chipset 'hardware' release with updated voltage regulators. A BIOS update will not add support for C2D processors on a Rev. 1 P5LD2 release. Anyway. OP if you have a Revision 2 release of the P5LD2 945, some C2D processors are supported.
