I am very new to overclocking and need some assistance getting more performance out of my system.

The spec:

P5Q MOBO(all clocking settings are managed by auto)
q6600 quad processor w/stock cooling :(
2x2GB G.Skill PC2 6400
XP 32-Bit
Antec Lanboy(looking to replace soon for one with better cooling).
EVGA Nvidia 9800GT 512mb pcie16x video card

I want to get the most i can out of this atm for gaming without overheating.
Typical "high" load for this is typically WoW, Ventrilo, Web Browser, and music playing at the same time.
Typically on this load i will get about 42 degees C from the processor and about 43-44 degrees C on my mobo.

Thanks in advance for the help

Heh. With that load overclocking your CPU seems kinda pointless almost. A OS that does better assignment of threads (programs request where the thread goes but the OS has final say, XP's single major weakness with duals and specially quads) will help more.

I do have vista 32bit installed in a dual boot on the same machine. does vista help with these problems? i noticed from going from xp @ ~75fps to ~45 fps in vista.

Really have no need to OC your Q6600 if you're just playing WoW. Frankly won't see much difference there. Your current setup should blow WoW away.

However, if you want to OverClock that CPU, I'd strongly suggest you buy an aftermarket CPU cooler (I love my Xigmatek HDT-S1283).

You shouldn't really see that big of a hit between XP and Vista. With your CPU, 4GB of 800 RAM, and your 9800GT, you shouldn't be seeing a 30FPS drop between XP and Vista with WoW.
