Do old versions of DX overwrite newer ones?

I was just installing an older video game and it prompted me to install DX9, which I refused because I know I have a newer version, but instead of going ahead and finishing the installation, the program apparently cancelled the entire installation process and so I've just installed again and let it install DX, but did it overwrite my newer version of DX or is it smart enough not to do that?

Depends on the installer, but usually newer versions don't get over-written.

If it does, just re-install the new version.

I don't know how to check. I've opened dxdiag and it says DX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904). I know there have been several releases of dx9.0c, but I don't know if those numbers in the brackets indicate the newest version of it or not.
