Defective Card??

Hello all,

I recently bought a Powercolor HD 4830. I put it in my inspiron 518 along with a 500 w psu and it seems to work fine if I have overclocking disabled. However when i use the Catalyst control center to overclock much at all I notice random dots and lines all over the screen. I have read many reviews of the card and people being able to overclock it and max out the memory to 2100 with no problems but as soon as i apply even half of what others have done and start a game the unstability is noticeable. Is this normal or does my card sound buggy?

I just want to make sure my card is not defective.

Here are my specs.

Inte Pentium dual-core E5200 (2MB L2, 2.5GHz, 800FSB
3GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz
450GB hard drive
500w Thermaltake PSU

Any advice is much appreciated

when it comes to overclocking, nothing is guaranteed.

however you can check to make sure that your fan is up and temps are reasonable. Make sure you are using the latest Catalyst drivers.

meh, my 9600GT stock 700/1680/950 only got 720/1750/1050... i've seen some people get 790-800 core on their 9600GT's. cheaper ones than mine too.

not every card will get the same clocks as another 4830. just like CPU's. some e5200's need 1.5V to get 4GHz, some need 1.7v suicide.

Hi,

Your card is not defective, those dots and lines you see ar called artifacts I believe and are direct result of overclock of your graphic chip/memory. You can dowload ATItool, it kinda helps to overclock your card while displaying a rotating 3d cube where you can spot artifacts in real-time so you can adjust card OC to a satysfying speed/artifacts ratio :) Just like flyin15sec and venom said, nothing is guaranteed when it comes to OC, but you got potentially perfect overclocker in your e5200 so you should give it a shot too.
