I read somewhere that the FCC requires cable companies to provide a
hdtv set top box with firewire to it's subscribers, just went to
comcast here in michigan and their box motorola dct5100 has none.

It's not a law that every box has to have FireWire, just that boxes with
FireWire must have it enabled.

I'm not sure if there is a timeframe for requiring FireWire in all boxes.

Dargo, Tell them you have a Mits that has no dvi but uses firewire for
HD. FCC regs says they have to give you a proper box if cable co has
one.
Look at http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/2/4762.html
for more Mits firewire problems.

You read wrong, sorry. I doubt you will see a HDTV box with a working
firewire plug at all. They must by law provide with a CableCard instead of
a box if your TV is so equipped and you want it.

I have a SA 4200 HD with firewire. I insisted upon the firewire
so I could record HD on a JVC HM-DH5U. When I get one
I will let you know if it is functional or not.
I am surprised that a game junkie is not recording HD to a PC
using firewire.

I would hope not.

Having one common standard for supplying video to a monitor/TV from an
STB would be nice. But I sure would not pick Firewire or USB for that.
75-ohm coax with a digital baseband (not analog) would be a lot simpler
and more reliable.

Moron.

The FCC FireWire ruling concerns recording of HD video. Without it, you
are locked into cable-company provided systems.

He does persist in proving that, doesn't he.

which is the point of my question, without firewire to record hd
hd over cable is useless, guess I'll stick with ota where you still
have at least for now the right to record.

Dargo.

FWIW, I've had a Motorola DCT-6200 cable box for 18 months now, from whose
FireWire output I record HD video on a Mac. Here in metro Atlanta, both
Charter & Comcast use this box.

I see the 2 sociopaths of the NG do hang together.

So what. It's still a bad choice for video/audio out.

Join the boycott against cable. OTA and satellite provide everything
you get on cable, except maybe a local access channel.

Since it's the *only* choice for recordable HDTV data streams that
supports both input and output on the same cable, we once again see that
you ignored the basic requirements of the problem.

We also know that you have no real world experience with *any* of these
connection systems, so you're hardly an authority on what is good and
what is bad.

Hence:

Yep, you do keep showing your lack of research with every post.
