Hi,

I thought it might be a good idea to upgrade to 4gig of ram, and i seem to have narrowed it down to these ones :

Patriot Extreme Performance 4GB 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-12 EPP Dual Channel Memory Kit
http://www.directcanada.com/produc [...] re=PATRIOT

Patriot Viper Extreme Performance 4GB DDR2 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-12 Memory Kit
http://www.directcanada.com/produc [...] re=PATRIOT

Corsair XMS2 DHX TWIN2X4096-6400C4DHX 4GB DDR2 2X2GB PC2-6400 DDR2-800 CL 4-4-4-12 240PIN Memory Kit
http://www.directcanada.com/produc [...] re=CORSAIR

I don't know all the differences between them, so I was looking for advice as to which one I should get. If the difference between them isn't that big, would it just be better to get the cheapest one?

I use an asus p5b deluxe mb and a e6600 cpu. I have a slight overclock, but not enough to require > ddr2 800

Another question, I currently use corsair 2x1gb dd2-667 4-4-4-12, if i get the 4gig of ram, should I just ditch the old rams i have, or would trying to use them, perhaps overclocking them or underclocking the 4gig rams to get 6 gig of rams be worth it, provided they can run together?

Patriot Extreme Performance 2.2v

Corsair 2.1v

Patriot Viper 2.2v

They all have the same timings but the Corsair is capable of it at lower voltages which means it uses better chips.

As for your second question what OS are you using?

well i doubt that you can overclock the old ram to be as fast as the new ram. so in this case i'd loose the old ram.

as far as which ram to choose? they are all good brand with same speeds and timings. i'd choose the cheapest one with best heatsink, the patriot viper. the patriot extrreme perfor... has a crappier heatsink by the looks of it.

Ideally, ditch the old ram. It'll drag down the 4gb of new ram to its slower speed. And if you overclock them to 800 (if it works), the timing will be loosened. Either way, it'll drag down performance. Currently 4 gb is enough, 6gb won't make a difference on typical applications.

That site doesn't show detailed specs, like voltage. When timings are the same, choose sticks with the lowest voltage or the highest voltage range tolerance. 1.8v is better than 2.0v. 1.8-2.2v range is better than 1.9-2.0v range.

Also, there's only so much you can tell from the limited specs. Go on newegg.com, search for the model number, and look up the user feedbacks for what performance others get. Doesn't matter if you can't order from them, it's still a good source of user reviews.

Thanks for the replies

I use Vista, so it should detect the 4gigs of ram

the corsair is 2.1V , the patriot (both are 2.2V)

so the corsair would be slightly better then?

Yes. Although you should still try to find reviews.

Ya , i tried checking some reviews, the problem is that for all 3,  they all got good reviews, which makes choosing harder

if they were the same price, i would have grabbed corsair in a heartbeat (in the US at newegg, they are after all rebates), but patriot is appealing due to their lower price, not counting mail in rebates(those are always annoying to get to claim), they are nearly 30$ cheaper here then the corsair

in the US, the patriot is about the same price as Canada, but the corsair is nearly 30$ more in Canada then the US, if the price was the same as the US, the corsair would be about the same price as patriot

maybe I should hope the prices drop in Canada for the corsair

You could also look at other sites like NCIX and you might be able to find a better price.
