Hi all,
I have been putting togther a build (my first) and have changed my mind like 20 times.  I think I am ready to pull the trigger, but wanted to run it by you guys to make sure it is a good build for the money.  It will serve as the household general pc, media/music server and light gaming (mainly racing games).   I was going to go with E6750, but the e8400 was $10 more.  I think it will work with this setup?

Also - Assuming this is a good build, is there anything missing to do the build?  I.e. fans, etc?

Thanks all,
JD

Better off with the 9600GT or a HD3870 for a GPU.

If you want 8800GTS get the G92 512 card not the old slower crap. 9600GT or 3870 would be better then the 320 GTS.

Not sure why I picked that card, so I am not attached to it in any way.  Can you guys recommend an exact model of 9600GT that would work.  I new egged it and there are 2 pages full of them.

Thanks,
JD

I have a E8400 on a DS3L and have had no trouble at all, the E8400 is like a bullet compared to my old P4 2.4ghz! I also Have the Sonatta III and really like it. Some people don't like the glossy finish but it doesn't bother me. I did have the Earthwatts PSU fail on me after about a week though.

As for the 9600GT EVGA and XFX are supposed to be good, no personal experience though.

Hope this helps!

I took look at the 8800GTS G92 512 and its like $259?  Ouch!

What is the best I can do for around $140-$160ish?  I really dont understand the hierarchy of these gpu models, so I am just guessing.  The one issue I see with the 9600GT is that it does not have linux drivers and I will be VM'ing linux.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
JD

Well since you will only be doing some light gaming, an 8800 gts would be overkill. Is also out of your budget. Somthing a little less expensive will serve you just fine. Here is what i would recommend:

8800GS=

or

3850 512 mb=

Those are both great cards and can run any game out there, maybe not crysis at max settings or anything, but it should be fine for you.

Just choose the one with better linux support.

Nice choice on  that 45nm cpu though.

the 8800 GT 512 MB slightly outperforms the 9600 GT according to Tom's at about the same price.  not sure about linux drivers or not.
