I only have the original system discs provided by Compaq ( in total) Can I reload the Vista, repair the lost files and NOT lose all my other programs and data?

The Windows Repair affects only Windows Files, but you should always backup your personal files, regardless, and not wait for a system failure, in which case it may be too late.
