I was looking to pick up an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ for a new build, and wanted to find out before I commit to getting this processor when the quad core processors, namely Intel unless there's a worthy Phenom somewhere, are better to go with than the aforementioned dual core and how much more they would run me. Also in regards to overclocking I'm new to the custom builds and have never overclocked, so unless it's easy to figure out I would prefer to stay with the stock settings.

It depends on your budget and what you want to do with it. Most here will recommend that you step up to an E8400 from Intel. Its still a dual core, but has superior performance when compared to the 6400+. As far as quads go, again its all about your budget, but the current quad-core champ seems to be the Q6600.

If you can provide greater detail on what this system is going to be used for, Im sure that you can get a nearly complete list of parts for your new build.

Current Phenoms pretty much stink compared to Intel offerings.
