I need help on making a decision on a new system build. So far I have had multiple people tell me different things on what kind of a investment I should be making into my new rig. My price range is $1000-$1500, preferably as cheap as possible with the best bang for the buck equipment. The two most standard setups people have given me are as follows:
1)
# Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe Motherboard
# AMD AM2 6000+ Dual Core Processor
# 2 x 1GB Crucial Ballistix DDR2 800MHz
# Asus EAH3870x2/HTDI/1GB Dual Core PCI-Express Graphics Card
# Seagate 250GB SATAII 16MB Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive
# Liteon 20x Dual Layer SATA DVDRW with Lightscribe
# Thermaltake 750Watt Modularized Cable Management Power Supply
# Antec Nine Hundred Gaming Case
# Cooler Master 120mm LED Fan for Case Sidepanel
or
2)
# ABIT IP35 Pro
# Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 3.0Ghz
# 2 x 1GB OCZ (Platnum or Gold "undecided" ) DDR2 800MHz
# Asus EAH3870x2/HTDI/1GB Dual Core PCI-Express Graphics Card
# Seagate 320GB SATAII 16MB Cache 7200RPM Hard Drive
# Liteon 20x Dual Layer SATA DVDRW with Lightscribe
# Thermaltake 750Watt Modularized Cable Management Power Supply
# Antec SLK3700 BQE Mid-Tower Case
P.S. I will be using Canadian currency and am open to any kind of opinion on anything. Have not decided on operating system yet (XP Pro or Vista). I am also curious about the AM2 6400+ Black Edition, would it be worth considering plugging into the first setup.
First, the Q6600 doesn't come at 3.0 GHz stock but at 2.66 GHz. Of course, from what i have heard, you should be able to reach that kind of speed relatively easily with the necessary cooling.
The Athlon 64 X2 is a rather old processor. Not that it's bad but huh... 90 nm fabrication technology looks so old now that we have 45 nm processor from Intel . But I do thing they are a bit outdated and they don't perform that well when you compare them against more recents chips (ie Intel Core2).
So, i would say go with the Q6600, especially if you think about overclocking it. Else, you might want to take a look at Wolfdale processors, especially if you don't do much video editing or things like that where most applications are already multi-threaded optimized.
