I7 920 vrs. i7 965 A Question

I am planning a new build. It will be air cooled. From what I have read it seems the way to go is a 920 with O.C. There seems to great gain from the 965 with O.C. and the cost different is high.

My question is about cooling and heat. Will the 965 run cooler since it is the multiplier and not the voltage being changed? I would like to get 3.8 or better and still be able to air cool it.

I understand that for the difference in cost I could get a liquid cooling set up, get the speed from the 920 and still have some coin in the bank left over.

The 965 might run cooler, but it isn't because of the method of overclocking. It's because the 965 is a higher binned chip, and will probably take less voltage to hit 3.8 or so (mine needs under 1.225V to hit 3.73, and under 1.3 to hit 4). Even so, I'd probably go with the 920, as the cost difference is too high to really justify. Besides, with good air cooling, the 920 should hit 3.6 at least, and probably higher.

My 920 runs 4.0 8h prime 95 stable with 1.3vcore load(1.26 idle).

Just reinforcing what other people have said, just stick with the 920, its ALOT cheaper than the 965 and you will still get good performance out of that 920. After all that extra money will just make doing future upgrades that much easier when better stuff is out that

love how you try to compare all of these i7's for the last time they are the same F'n Chip, of course you go with the 920 unless you like paying them to clock it up for you... Pay attention

Well, the 965 is a higher binned part, so there is a slight difference. Still, they are quite close.

the only 3 advantages to the 965 is of course the better binning, higher memory bandwidth and multiplyer, and bragging rights. but for the £600 saving id for a phase change rig and rape the 920 upto 4.5ghz
