After I did an Windows XP update and restarted my PC the monitor turned off then a box opened on it that said, 'Not Optimum Mode. Recommended Mode 1280-1024 60Hz analog' The screen seems to be 'frozen' and I am unable to get it to do anything. What should I do?

My simple suspicion is that the message may not have originated from Windows but the monitor itself. This may be why the computer appears to have frozen.

Start computer in safe mode, lower the resolution below the maximum capability of the monitor. They are for more forgiving of a lower than max resolution. If Windows will start normally at a reduced resolution, you can increase it to the indicated 1280-1024 and see if it will be accepted.
