Any Intel P35 will work and should be in your price range.  All the major distributors like ASUS, Gigabyte, etc. have Intel P35's available.  The X38/x48 is out of your price range as well as the latest P45.  Nvidia's latest 790i is out of your price range.  The 750i would be your best bet if you prefer Nvidia.  HTH.

Hello and welcome to the forums mate :)

If u dont need SLI/CF then go for a P35 board as badge said.
I recommend boards like ASUS P5K-E WIFI, GIGABYTE P35 DS3R/DS3L
ABIT IP35 PRO

i read somewhere that a mb with pcie2.0 and fsb 1333 would be best for games. The ASUS P5K-E WIFI and GIGABYTE P35 DS3R/DS3L  enter in this category?

All of these boards are PCI-E 1.1 and PCI-E 2.0 is backward compatible with PCI-E 1.1

Also all of these boards support 1333MHZ FSB(The P5K-E WIFI version even supports 1600MHZ FSB too)

*This motherboard supports FSB 1333/1066/800

pcie2.0 is newer than pcie1.1.... faster data transfer

this is the slots where you install your video cards

pcie2.0 slots are backwards compatible so you can install pcie1 cards on the 2.0 slots but not other way around

note - the higher the fsb, the better - especially for video games... some motherboards come 1600mhz fsb stock already

so a ASUS P5K-E WIFI  (pcie1.0) is not compatible with a 8800gts(pcie 2.0)?

im sorry i dont know what i was thinking when i said "not the other way around"

yes it will work but your 8800gts will not be running at its maximum performance since your p5k mobo bottlenecks (or caps) ur vid card at pcie1.0 speeds

so basically...
if you get a pcie1 mobo, and have a pcie2 graphics card, it will work but only at pcie1 speeds
if you get a pcie2 mobo, and have a pcie1 graphics card, it will work but only at pcie1 speeds

so the moral of the story is....
if you want to unleash the full data transfer of ur pcie2.0 graphics card, therefore increasing the performance, you want to get a mobo that has pcie2.0 slots

if u look @ some benchmarks u will see that PCI-E 2.0 doesnt make a difference for current cards compared to PCI-E 1.1

oic.... perhaps that might change in the future when cards become 2.0 standard?  just a thought if you want to "future proof"

For current card as i said it doesn't make a noticeable difference

also glad aobut your engineering professor :)

Well there are ALWAYS some people who are happy/unhappy with their components, u can't say because this guy has good/bad experience with something, then its a good/bad products

for example,i am one of the proud owners of P5K-E WIFI and i love it, its rock solid :)
