Hey what’s up Tom’s Hardware techies? :hello: I’ve been working with my brother (who posts on here regularly) on a new build. It’s been pretty fun so far and I’ve learned a lot about the current state of PC technology through this process of building my own PC. :wahoo: :)

I just wanted to get some knowledgeable opinions on my new build before I spend hundreds of dollars on it. I plan on over clocking my processor and I want to be able to do online gaming, play the popular (current) games on VISTA at a decently fast rate with some pretty nice looking graphics. I don’t need a super machine, and I’m only looking to spend an additional $600-$800 more on the remaining components (already have the processor and monitor).

Ok here goes!

You dont need such an expensive powersupply
the corsair 620 will be more than enough and will save you 100 bucks.

Id go with either a 8800gts (512) or a 8800gt (g92) 512 over the 8800gts 320. They are both faster/more energy efficient/quieter/ more features than the g80 8800gts 320 u were lookin at.
The 8800gts 512's are only a little over 200 bucks now on newegg.

The memory is cool... but id recommend this for about 20 -25 bucks more http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820148183

crucial ddr2-800 but the timings are better 4-4-4-12... (its rated ddr2 1000 also at 5-5-5-15).
Better for an overclock than the g.skill 4gb you were looking at

Personally i dont really like asus boards except for the striker extreme...
Everything below their top line ive always seen problems with.
However for the price/open box/ with wifi for 90 bucks and a p35 chipset... thats a good deal. (just make sure u get the back panel with that open box)

Get a nice cooler... also..at least an artic cooling freezer pro 7

Nice build...one thing you might want to consider is an aftermarket CPU heatsink depending on the amount of overclocking you're doing.

Anyone hear of a RC-690 case. Would seem to be a good case if you were going to OC right?

The hell with a artic Cooling Freezer. Go with a XIGMATEK HDT-S1283. Still pretty cheap and last a knew it was best in class according to FrostyTech.

Then if you really want to get Kraze you can replace the stock fan with one of these...

The question left are is it worth CAS 4, compared to CAS 5 memory?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820231145
compared to
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6820211282

G. Skill better name, A- Data is CAS 4..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6811147038
and is the Rosewill R5601-BK a good enough case for OCing? We are talking Q6600 to the 3.2-3.6 MHz range.

Thoughts?

I am thinking the "DDR2 1000" is the better choice if you want to OC above the 3.6 Mhz and run the memory above the 800 level.

Any other thoughts?

Profile: old hand

Nooooo the Rosewill PSUs don't perform well ....... get the Corsair 550VX instead ...
