Can free space in a recovery partition be used?

I have a new Compaq Presario CQ-50 130us it came with vista home pre-installed and the hard drive is partitioned into 'Local Disk(C)'- main drive, and 'Presario_RP(D)'-the recovery partition. The recovery partition has over a gigabyte of free space and I was wondering if it was safe to take that free space and add it to my primary drive?

Yes you, if you use a partition editor. While you're at it, and before you do anything, back up the data on your restoration partition, just to be sure.
