right. i was on my pc watching a film with vlc i opened another program tried to close vlc and the whole thing crashed, so i restarted my pc. got past the boot up screen thing and then the black page with all the white writing, and then it came to a page where it had a count down and options to start windows normally. start in safe mode ect ect i have clicked on all the things possible and then it just resets itself back to the boot screen and does the same thing over and over. it has done something like this before but when i put my old hard drive in it comes up with the windows repair hard drive thing but it did not work. can someone please help me! many thanks, max

Let's start with "I have clicked on all the things possible". As I recall, you cannot click on anything on that screen, you need to use the keyboard.

- Maybe you tried to use your keyboard and it didn't work on that screen?
- If so, do you have a USB keyboard (flat connector) or a PS2 keyboard (round connector).
- If you are using a USB keyboard, do you have a PS-2 keyboard you can plug in? I'd rather not send you into BIOS at the moment to try and get your USB keyboard working on that screen.

Also, tell me about your "old" hard drive? When did you replace it and why?

Finally, please tell me the name and model of your computer, or the components if you built it.

NP . . . wife calls me a lot worse :)

So I gather you can use your keyboard to select an option (ie, your keyboard works on that screen) and you have at least once chosen "Start in Safe Mode". The PC tries, but it just reboots? In other words, you can't get into Safe Mode?

If you CAN get into safe mode, click "run", type in "chkdsk /f" without the quotes, and hit enter.

If you CANNOT get into safe mode, I'd like to test if your PC is in basic working order by using your OLD hard drive and do a Repair Install following these instructions:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp [...] oug92.mspx

If that runs and boots to Windows on your old HD, we know a lot. Then we might try the same thing on your new HD, or do something else.
