Not exactly an HDTV question, but I'd like your thoughts on how fast LCD prices
will fall.
We have a 13" TV in the kitchen which is 17 years old. Still works but have
noticed the picture is drawing in from the edges a little. A sign of age and
eventual failure, I assume. We want to go to a 20" screen because aging eyes
have trouble reading stock tickers, news crawlers, etc. There is room for a 20"
flat screen CRT but a 20" LCD would really be nice. Unfortunately LCD's are 3
times the price of CRT's.
My dilemna is whether to buy a 20" CRT now or hope the old TV lasts a couple
more years and LCD price fall dramatically in that time. Do you think we are
close to the point where small screen LCD prices might become competitive with
CRT's?

It's quite unlikely that LCDs will drop in price without forcing the
price of CRTs down. They will get closer in price over time and
eventually CRT sets may disappear, but I expect that will take a decade
or more.
If room isn't an issue, and you say it isn't. Save your money and buy a
new 20" CRT TV. By the time that one dies you will probably be forced to
buy an HDTV as NTSC TVs will probably be ancient history at retail.

I'm a contractor. If you want an opinion, I'll sell you one.
Which one do you want?

Current 34 inch Sony 16:9 CRT, C$2000. Weighs about 200 pounds, so
needs its custom stand, free in the current sale, normally C$400 more.
Current 32 inch Sony LCD, C$2600, light enough to put on any
available stand the right size.
Looks like convergence is about here at the mid sizes.

Small (less than 25" ) LCDs will drop more than large ones, because they
are also part of the desktop computer industry. In the 45" and above
range, various microprojection systems (DLP, LCoS, etc.) will drop far
faster than LCD panels of the same resolution.
