One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned

I plugged a TrekStor external HD into several computers - USD (XP and Vista) but keep getting this message although it recognizes that a new device was added and installs the drivers. It was previously working fine. What could be the problem?

This happens every time you connect the hard disk? There could be something wrong (though nothing necessarily fatal) with your external HDD's controller.
