Inspiron 1525 - Device Manager unusable - no sound

Hello,
I have the inspiron 1525 vista laptop. first. the onboard speakers/sound device. stop and seem to have disappeared. Also, multiple software failures, error "APPCRASH". i have tried to reinstall the drivers, and almost everything else. I dont run the recovery or reinstall os, because there is alot of data i cant lose. I have created a small partition on the HD, is it possible to install the recovery or os to that partition, and use it to repair? i decided not to proceed after creating the partition until i have more guidence.

Buy some flash drives & backup the data you don't want to lose, as a precaution. - Then Restore / reinstall
