Hey guys, right now I have an 8800gts 640mb. I've been looking all over the internet trying to compare an 8800gt 256mb a 9600gt, and the 8800gts 640mb, to see which one is the best one. I havent come up with anything. So which one do you think would run the best. I have crysis, and it runs alright on my 8800gts640mb. but from what I've seen it will perform a little better on one of the other cards, and so will other games as well. Which is the best one?

If I wait I wont be able to buy a 9900gtx anyways, thats why I'm looking at the cheap video cards. Can someone just help me out and either show me a site that compares all three next to each other, or tell me which one out of the three is the best choice.

and I cant find it on tomshardware charts so dont even bother. for some reason these guys havent updated there charts with the newest video cards yet.... no one has

if you don't have much money, then why are you even thinking of upgrading from a 8800GTS 640MB? As far as I'm concerned, it's still an awesome card. It trashes my 7900 GS.

There really isn't anything worth upgrading from G80GTS. It performs as good as 9600gt. You are just wasting money. Wait for next generation and substantial performance difference to spend money on. Not 20% increase for $100-200. That is just a waste.

Tbh, none of the cards you are looking at will give you a super noticeable improvement. Not enough to go thru the hassle and waste the money.

You need to wait for the 9900GTX to come out, wait for other cards to beat it out by 30% performance gains and watch its list price rock bottom then make the upgrade.

That will be 2-3 years from now Im sure and that will give you enough time to save up some coin for the upgrade.

Thats not just my opinion, thats the sensible thing to do. It doesnt make sense at all to throw money away you dont have to get a 10% performance gain. Simply not worth it.

You already have more of a video card than 80% of society so enjoy that card a while longer before you give up on her!!

OP- I have a 8800 GTS 640 in one of my other computers and it does rather well. I wouldn't dump it for one of the new cards. I think that if a more performance is wanted, you might be better off picking up another 8800 GTS 640 and going the SLI route. I really doubt that the new 8800GT 256 would be any better. It would more likely be a step backwards.

Agreed. And another 8800GTS 640 is at a sweet price point. Since you already have one this is the best route and you will see an improvement.

When I went SLI my score jumpred from 13,500 to 15,700 and my games seem a little more vibrant and smoother.

I agree that SLI is the way to go assuming that you have a capable mother board. Otherwise, its just not worth it right now. You are near the top in terms of video cards and probably wouldn't be able to see the difference in the gains you would achieve with a new card.

Upon receiving the first few replies that told me it was a bad idea I started thinking about SLI-ing two of them seeing as how I have an SLI mother board. I tried looking for a PNY 8800gts 640 mb video card but couldnt find one for a decent price. all the ones I found were $250 plus. which is dumb because an 8800gt 512 is just $180....

The only single card that you would see any real gains would be a 9800gtx, even then the gains wouldn't be that much unless you got one fo the overclocked editions.

But like other people have said...getting another 8800gs would give you slightly better performance than the 9800gtx for less money.

He already has a 8800gts so a 9600gt or 8800gs wouldn't do him good unless he was making money off the deal.

TO: OP

Either sell your card to make money and get a 9600gt or if you can't can't make money I wouldn't sell it at all. Maybe you might be able to get 8800gt after you sell your card but most people wouldn't want to buy a G80GTS for $300 or $200 when they can get a G92 GTS for that much.

Lol yeah these guys are funny.

but I just wish I could get to the 30fps with Crysis. I'm around 23-24 tops when I overclock the video card to 680 : 1800. I guess I'll have to wait a year or so to buy another one, maybe by then the prices for them will be a lot cheaper. Because right now its really hard for me to find a PNY 8800gts640mb. and the ones I do find, are around 300 dollars FOR SOME ODD REASON...... but yeah. thx for the help.

You don't always have to play crysis @ high detail. You can compromise to get more performance and I doubt the image quality difference would be so much that you need a brand new card.

I would wait for a card that can play crysis very high detail instead.

This is a lot of expense and trouble for 1 game.I catch your drift what you want to do and why but its not worth it if the money is tight. Your most sensible option is to wait until a much better card comes out and then upgrade or simply get a second identical card. You should get close to the frame rates you are wanting with a second card and it doesnt have to be another PNY. It can be a different brand.
