What is the point of DDR3 RAM?

If the fastest intel FSB's are 1333 and 1600, what is the point of DDR3 RAM? Is it possible to take a clock speed of 333 (1333 fsb) for a processor like e8400 and make it match 677 and 800 mhz RAM? Or am I just wasting money right now until faster FSB Intel processors come out?

If you are running a E8400, you need to run DDR2 667 to match it. If you overclock, to lets say 3.6ghz from the standard 3.0ghz, the FSB becomes 400 and needs to be paired with DDR2-800mhz. If you overclock further to 4.050ghz, you have 450 FSB and needs to be paired with DDR2-900 and so forth. It is possible to run ddr2-800 mhz on a stock cpu.

DDR3 will not be much better than DDR2 until Nehalem. With an IMC and the dumping of that old-fashioned FSB, the extra bandwidth will help alot. Plus Nehalem only supports DDR3, so you don't have a choice ;)

The higher the FSB the faster RAM you need to OC. Unless you have a QX series, but then the price of the DDR3 is not really a concern.

You might have wanted to link your question to a specific processor.

Right now DDR3 is less of a concern as the core arch. isn't as affected by bandwidth. Also, the FSB speeds reachable don't really require DDR3.

With CPUs at 1600FSB that are OCed you start getting into territory that DDR2 can't reach so you border on needing DDR3. If Intel keeps raising the FSB, then DDR3 will be necessary, and I assume they will.

When Nehalem with the IMC is released DDR3 will be more important. If you can afford that when it comes out, then you can afford DDR3, which is all that will be usable.

All hail progress. I'm going to hold out for mainstream pricing of the octo-core, that's 16 with HTT.

Well you had better get ready they're coming. Hum, maybe we will have to do ray-tracing with all the extra cores.

I should get a spiff from Intel.

um you start seeing benefits of ddr3 @ 1600 linked and sync'd with the FSB. Generally its not needed by most i agree. Sadly intel rigs w/ ddr3 1600 still score a hair lower on banwidth than ddr2 1066 on amd's phenoms...makes my mouth water to think of nethlam chips finally having an IMC and truely utilizing ram's full potential.

Sorry for any confusion but I wasn't referring to the ddr2 667 in my post, I was referring to the clock speed of ddr3 1333 (667) and ddr3 1600 (800). My question is there any way for a e8400 to even fully utilize these sticks on a board like GIGABYTE GA-EP35C-DS3R and takes the chip and DDR3? It seems like a waste of money on bandwidth I can't use.

Sorry guys but can someone send me a PM and explain what ray-tracing is? Thinks I missed out on those articles while frollicking (this is a real word, my om uses it alot!) around Northeren Africa....

Bloody Intel! Releaseing their new stuff just as I'm about to order my new Baby form the US :'( Please mention in the PM that I won't be able to afford the Nahelm and all the fancy trinckets yet so it doesn't really affect me.... I need the morral support!

The rest of the stuff I know... Thanks and sorry for hi-jacking this thread....

i believe everyone you ask will tell you that ddr3 is pointless right now because of the price to performance ratio... just get more sticks of ddr2 or oc or something... anything besides spending your hard earned money on ddr3.. unless ur rich... then go for it hah
