Hi,
As the title suggests, i am trying to make my case run silent (or as close as i can get it) but still run 4 fans.
I'm swapping out my CPU fan (which i think is making the majority of the noise) for that huge Scythe one so i can run it without the fan (or maybe with the fan on the lowest setting), but i also want to swap out my other 4 case fans for the quietest ones possible.
So....my question is; what are the quietest case fans avaliable, and will it really be 'silent' when that many fans are together.
Thanks in advance.
PS: The reason im doing this is that i sleep with the pc about 3 feet from my head and want to be able to leave it on overnight.

I would say Nexus, Noctua, and Papst are the quietest fans around, but you'll pay more for them.

To answer the title: Absolutely!

The quietest fans are the Scythe SlipStream 500/800RPM and the Scythe S-Flex 800/1200 in the 120mm department.

Noctua makes a very quiet 120mm fan. My personal observation is that its quieter than the Scythe. More money, yes, but to me, silence is golden.

Definatly. As posted earlier, the Scythe S-Flex line is an exelent choice. I have 11 of the 800Rpm S-Flex fans in my system and I must strain to hear it at night.

My case is the cooler master cosmos RC1000 (i got it because it was one of the few full tower cases i could find that didnt have a windows, plus i came with the acoustic foam already built in)

just 1 more question. Is it safe to only have heatsinks cooling your CPU (granted it would be a very big 1, like the Thermalright IFX-14 Inferno Fire eXtinguisher).
Atm, i'm not overclocking (since the E8400 is enough to run anything atm), so could i just get something like the Thermalright IFX-14 Inferno Fire eXtinguisher and run it passively?

Ive found Arctic Cooling fans to be very quiet.

The Thermalright IFX-14 was designed to run passively or actively. You will need to make sure you have good air flow and you probably wont be able to overclock... you can always underclock the CPU if you want also but i dont see the point. Actively it uses a 120mm or 140mm fan which if you get a good one it will be hard to hear anywho

The IFX is a ripoff (despite begin awesome), and I'd imagine is a ROYAL PITA to install. You could safely run any of the following passively with a E8400 & decent case airflow:

Scythe Ninja (and copper version, for a premium)
Scythe Infinity
Scythe Mine
Scythe Mini Ninja (most likely)
Xigmatek S1283
Scythe Orochi
Cooler Master Hyper 212
Kingwin Revolution 120
OCZ Vindicator
Thermalright HR-01
Thermalright SI-128 (with fins in the vertical position)
Thermaltake Fanless 103
TT Sonic Tower
